Five Decades of Church-based Development Cooperation

Impact – Experiences – Learning

After five decades of development cooperation, poverty, hunger and oppression still hit the headlines. What are the effects of projects and programmes, which changes have they initiated? In current times, the additional question has come up if and how development cooperation can contribute to making globalisation more sustainable. During the early years of “Brot für die Welt’s” ("Bread for the World") operation, individual donors were motivated by the Christian command of sharing. Today, they put as much emphasis on professional, result-oriented work with their donations.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, “Brot für die Welt” has documented impact in selected fields of work. Over a period of 2 years, independent consultants have collected information in 21 case studies on 4 continents. The findings of these case studies have been analysed and documented in résumés relating to the focal topics rural development, role of women in the development process and development communication.
